Predicta Image  'PICT-O-GUIDE '

Dear Predicta TV Collectors and those who want to fix a ''Problem'' with their TV:

Everyone is welcome to contribute any solutions to the following TV Problems, as per the G4242 and other Philco Predicta TV's.   Any notes, solutions and references to what Capacitors and Resistors should be addressed and referenced to in the Schematics' is welcome, and should be accompanied by spec's and schematic component numbers and values. You can even send drawings in JPG picture form to illustrate what you are saying. Please make your solutions easy to read and understandable for "Predicta Repair For Dummies" people!

Thank You Very Much, and have FUN!

BAND or BAR, BRIGHT, LEFT:      (BRIGHT SPOT AREA ON LEFT SIDE OF SCREEN:

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEMS and DEFINITIONS OF TERMS:

A real bright white foggy type light bleeding from LEFT to RIGHT into picture area. Can vary from an inch to several inches. Fades away to normal as it gets closer to middle.

EXPLANATION OF PROBLEM:

Weak or OPEN Capacitor Filter. Not enough voltage coming from the 260C voltage source.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

1.) C2 Filter on G4242 Schematics. C2C - 260V power supply is not working - is "OPEN". Picture tube not getting enough voltage. Thus, picture is brightening up on the Left Side. The nitty details?... I do not know - I was just told to try this.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:   Look on Schematics and see the Power Supply Section - Circuit. Sources 280V B+ and 260V C. They are designated as C2B and C2C. Attach a Resistor from these two Filter Legs and run the C2C by the B+ Supply. Try different resistor values from 4500 ohm - 2200 ohm,  down to 100 ohm. As the VALUE of the resistor is reduced, the voltage is increased and the LIGHT WHITE BRITE area will decrease back into the Left side of the screen, and as the value is reduced further, it will disappear altogether! C2C will then get power from the C2B side of the filter. You can test this FIRST by using CLIPS and just cross wire it directly WITHOUT a resistor and see if the BRITE AREA quickly disappears. If so, try different resistors and see where you need the set the voltage to get the best picture.

Band or Bar,  Bright, Center.

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEMS and DEFINITIONS OF TERMS:

EXPLANATION OF PROBLEM:

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

1.) Electrical Interference from a tube or high voltage in close contact with Video input wire going to the picture tube.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

1.) Move the video wire away from all components or use a thicker insulation wire.

Blooming.

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEMS and DEFINITIONS OF TERMS:

Picture is weak;  is faint and will increase for a moment but bloom away, when the BRIGHT control is increased.

EXPLANATION OF PROBLEM:

The voltage increase is short lived and thus the picture is short lived as well. Not enough High voltage to drive the picture tube and image.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

1.) High Voltage Weak.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

1.) Bad 1B3 Tube. Try replacing the H. V. Rectifier Tube.

Bars, Sound.

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEMS and DEFINITIONS OF TERMS:

EXPLANATION OF PROBLEM:

( Your TV is placed too close the the side of the house and the ''Bar'' next door! Too much ''music'' is causing your TV to get upset!)  ..........................Probably your audio sneaking into your Video signal!

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

Brightness Excessive.

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEMS and DEFINITIONS OF TERMS:

EXPLANATION OF PROBLEM:

1.) Ever SMOKE too much Hooch?, ..and then FLICK the lights on? Too much brightness, right? Well it's the same with too much voltage put to the brightness.

2.)

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

1.) Try turning down the BRIGHT control. Or, rebuild the Brightness circuit.

RASTER ONLY: With No Picture, No Sound.

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEMS and DEFINITIONS OF TERMS:

OK, there are some reasons why your Predicta would Only have a RASTER, but with NO SOUND and NO PICTURE. You are not getting Video or Audio signals through the circuits!

EXPLANATION OF PROBLEM:

1.) There are May others, but here's ONE. The Series and Shunt Peaking Coils are DEAD - "Open".

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

1.)  There are TWO Peaking Coils: A ''Series Peaking'' Coil and a "Shunt Peaking" Coil that you need to check and replace if necessary. One the Schematics G4242, you'll find ( L11, 14 ohm, Value 470 ) and ( L13, 13 ohm,  390 ). L11 Series Peaking Coil is located near the 3AU6 Audio tube ON THE MAIN BOARD, and IF it is ''OPEN'', you will have NO SOUND/Audio. The Shunt Peaking Coil L13 is located near the 6AW8A Vid. Det. Tube. on the MAIN BOARD, and if it is 'OPEN" you will have NO SOUND and NO PICTURE. They look like the little SQUARE coils in the picture above.

Take a set of jumper wires and cross wire connect the little two wires sitting on top of the square coil. If you get a picture or sound, the coil is "open" and not working.

Just take another one like it off a dead, junk TV, or a new peaking coil of same value or as close to the value as possible and weld it across the top two wires. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE MAIN BOARD From the chassis!!!!

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEMS and DEFINITIONS OF TERMS: This is a Horizontal Output problem, where the picture lacks width and the images appear taller than usual.

EXPLANATION OF PROBLEM:

1.) Horizontal Output Tube 12DQ6A is weak. Capacitors. Resistors off, leaky, open, in the Horizontal Circuit.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

1.) Adjustment of the Width Control Pot off.

2.) Check Horizontal Output Tube for correct values. Replace if needed.

3.) Leaky Coupling Capacitor to the GRID of the Horizontal Output Tube.

4.) Bad Resistor in the H. Circuit.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEMS and DEFINITIONS OF TERMS:

EXPLANATION OF PROBLEM:  Sometimes technicians put the wires switched.

POSSIBLE CAUSES: Vertical Output Transformer Wires are switched.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: Change the wires and switch them back. See wiring diagram.
